Chengdu house church is persecuted again | Persecution

October 31, 2021 Washington, DC (International Christian Care)-Imagine one day when you get home, only to find that the keyhole of the door has been filled with glue. You are prohibited from entering your home.

Imagine one day your landlord asks you to move out immediately because you refuse to give up your faith. When you do not comply, you will find that the water, gas, and electricity of the house you are renting suddenly cut off. You are now living in the dark.

Imagine that one day you teach a few children in the church at home, but after beating your family (including your young children), the police suddenly broke in and arrested you. Your dog will also be "confiscated" by the police.

We often hear that there is a price to pay for following Christ. For the members of the Autumn Rain Covenant Church (ERCC) in Chengdu, China, all this has become a recurring nightmare, all because they are unwilling to give in and leave the house church that is regarded as a "cult" by the authorities . "

After the crackdown on December 9, 2018, hundreds of ERCC members and their leaders were arrested after a raid on the church, and local authorities adopted a high-pressure policy against those who went to the church.

Surveillance, harassment, pressure and threats to neighbors are all too familiar to ERCC members, especially those who actively serve and bluntly express their oppression. The local government treats them as trouble and only hopes that they are not there.

This is evident in the recent wave of targeted attacks-dozens of members face threats, detention and violence, even in the comfort of their own homes.

On Sunday, October 24, ERCC missionary Dai Zhichao was detained along with 27 other people in August and was later released. Uninvited guests knocked on the door early in the morning.

Soon, his door was painted red: "Pay off his debt." The glue filled his keyhole. At 10 o'clock in the morning, his home’s power supply was cut off for several hours until he asked the community management office, which claimed that the power outage was caused by the tripping of the circuit breaker.

A few days later, on October 28, Su Qiong attended school with several ERCC children at home, and her home was raided. The police broke in, took away Christian books and the hanging "God loves the world so much", beat Su, her husband Wang Song and their eight-year-old son, and then took the couple and a remaining adult to Wuhou District police station. Their two dogs were taken away for no reason.

They were later released, but their surveillance continues.

ERCC also shared that the other two families of Missionary Dai’s "Treading Water" group, Brother Shen Bing and Brother Niu Chuang, have been forced to move elsewhere in recent weeks.

According to Chinese aid agencies, other ERCC members have also faced increasing persecution in recent months. Officials cut off the electricity and water supply to missionary Lu Xuetao’s house for nine months to punish him for letting his brother Jia Xuewei live with his family. Brother Jia was repeatedly threatened for refusing to leave Chengdu.

The keyholes of the Zhu Hong brothers and Liang Huali brothers' homes were also blocked. The officials harassed his younger brother Tang Chunliang and his wife Zheng Chuanjuan and asked them to move. At the same time, Liu Wei's sister was forced to move five times in the past two years. The police summoned the Xiao Luobiao brothers to the Hongpailou police station on October 18, accusing him of "organizing a cult."

The list is too numerous to enumerate, and there are new trials and tribulations every day.

Although the ERCC has been the first to receive continuous suppression of house churches across China, this does not mean that other churches will be more relaxed. Almost every weekend, brave Chinese Christians report raids and arrests through their highly censored social media. These adversities are now their commonplace.

When we keep receiving the same news, we naturally feel tired and want to look at it from another angle. However, as we continue to live, the difficulties and persecution faced by our brothers and sisters in Christ have not disappeared. The least we can do is to cheer them up with our prayers. When persecution hits like a turbulent ocean, let us pray that God will provide for and protection for our Chinese brothers and sisters in Christ.
